Forum: news Subject: The New York Times - MacArthur Foundation Picks Eight Projects That Could Change the World

The MacArthur Foundation, known for bestowing its annual “genius” grants on artists, actors and other creative people, on Wednesday announced the eight semifinalists in a new competition: come up with the best proposal to solve a global problem, with a reward of $100 million.

Out of more than 1,900 proposals submitted, the foundation’s judges chose eight with goals that include eliminating river blindness in Nigeria, educating displaced children in countries like Syria, and caring for children in orphanages.
